About Ms. Asher

I was born and raised in Midland, Michigan. I attended a parochial elementary school and began attending public school in fifth grade. While I highly considered becoming a graphic designer, my heart and empathy pulled me to education. I attended Michigan State University and earned my Bachelors of Arts in Education being certified to teach kindergarten through 6th grade in a self contained classroom. I also had a focus in Social Studies. After teaching for a year in Detroit, I wished to be closer to family. I have been in Mt. Pleasant ever since.

Why I Became a Teacher

I am a teacher because supporting students as they learn is when I am the happiest. It all started with one girl named Laura and a program called Big Brothers Big Sisters Teaming Up with YOUth. During our weekly afterschool sessions I saw a little girl who was behind in school light up when I was enthusiastic and supportive. The growth she made academically and socially helped motivate me to become a teacher. Never before in my life had I felt so good and proud of what I had done then when I met with her. I would continue to work with the program for 4 years throughout high school. When I started to think about the degree I wished to pursue in college I thought about the experiences I had with Laura and the time I had teaching students clay during Clay Camp. I wanted to build relationships with my students and see them every day. This is why I decided to become an elementary teacher.

Friends and family are really important to me. I spend much of my free time with them

I started making pottery in high school and it has become one of my favorite creative outlets. I also taught a Clay Camp for multiple summers. This introduced me to teaching.

Visiting China influenced my goals in teaching. It became important to me to teach my students about diversity but also how we are all the same.
